Client Story

Another client of ours, a 43-year old Cambodian mother of three came to us for help.  After years of struggling to operate a donut shop business with her husband, they'd gone bankrupt.  And then they divorced.  When her husband left her, she applied for welfare for her children.  She said that without her husband, she felt as if she had lost her arms and legs, that she could do nothing by herself.  Our bilingual Family Coach counseled her about the need to provide for herself and her family.  We were able to find her a job as a clerk in a bagel shop.  At first, she worked only part-time, but now that her children are older, she's begun working full-time.  Her welfare assistance has been greatly reduced.  We helped her obtain a housing voucher, which helps her pay her rent.  She says she now ants an additional part-time job, so she can get off welfare completely.  She's motivated to become independent and stand on her own two feet.
